About Our Location and Community
Quick Lane Cochrane is located 9 River Heights Dr, off AB-22 and James Walker Trail S.
Cochrane is located about 30 minutes Northwest of Downtown Calgary but is only 11 km from the city limits. Cochrane dates to 1881 when it was named Cochrane Ranch after local farmer Matthew Henry Cochrane. It became a village in 1903 but did not incorporate as a town until 1971. As of 2021, there are just over 34,000 residents that call Cochrane home.
Cochrane is known for its western heritage. Historic Downtown Cochrane, or Main Street as locals call it, is officially 1st Street along the downtown blocks from 5th Avenue to Centre Avenue. You can check out the official Visitors Information Centre located on south side of 1st Street just east of 5th Avenue. There you can learn about the downtown walking tour and many other local secrets from Cochrane tourism ambassador Suzanne.
The Cochrane area was built up in the early 1900’s by two brothers, Andrew and Robert Chapman from Scotland. They started what was to become Chapmen Brothers Construction and built many of the homes and businesses in the downtown area.
The Rockyview Hotel is a must see for the western themed restaurant, saloon and hotel rooms. As one of the town’s oldest buildings, there is even a little history of ghosts in hotel room #4.
The Legacy Statue is in Centennial Plaza is a bronze statue dedicated to the local women who contributed to the early success of Cochrane. You will be able to tell immediately why town locals call it the “Chicken Lady” statue.
You can get a fun day in the sun at Big Hill Springs Provincial Park. The Park offers year-round small waterfalls and springs. A great place to have a picnic, go on a scenic hike or just watch the wildlife in the beautiful scenery of Alberta’s Rocky Mountain foothills
The Polar Bear Habitat is a natural habitat enclosure built around a lake and forest that is fun for the entire family. Watch current residents Ganuk and Henry in their as close to possible real life, natural habitat.
The Polar Bear Express train runs from Cochrane to Moosonee during summer months. This train follows the Artic watershed and crosses the historic fur trade trailways. Experience train travel and see beautiful scenery, hydroelectric dams and wildlife.
The Cochrane Winter Carnival has been going strong for 80 years. The festival originally started in 1934 and continued until about 1940. Then after a small hiatus was reborn in 1963 and included events like The Princess Pageant, fishing derby and polar bear dip that are still going on today. Additional events at the modern-day carnival include a parade, hockey games, torch light festivals, curling bonspiel and a variety show. There are also snowmobile courses constructed for public use. All these fun activities are watched over by the carnival’s official polar bear mascot Chimo.
Cochrane has a little bit of everything from ghost stories, wildlife habitats, snowmobile courses and outdoor hiking. This little town on the outskirts of Calgary gives the best of small town living and big city benefits all wrapped up into one.
